Nutmeg & mace

The nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans) is indigenous to the Moluccas or Spice Islands, of Indonesia. It also grows on a smaller scale in West Indies, Sri Lanka, India, China, Malaysia, Zanzibar, Mauritius, and Solomon Island. Mace, which is red, is the dried reticulated ‘aril’ of the fruit. Nutmeg is the dried seed kernel of the fruit.

Nutmeg (whole, oil, or powder) is used in soups, sauces, baked foods, confectionaries, puddings, savory dishes, seasonings etc., as a flavoring agent. It possesses stimulant, anti-flatulence, astringent and digestive properties. Nutmeg butter has been used in the form of ointments or balms to treat rheumatism and as a counterirritant. Nutmeg oil is used in cosmetics and toiletries.
