Asafoetida

Hing spice (Ferula asafoetida) is another name for asafoetida (Ferula asafoetida).  It has an acrid flavor and a pungent onion-like odor.

The herb has traditionally been used to treat whooping cough, asthma, bronchitis, epilepsy, ulcer, stomachache, flatulence, bronchitis, antispasmodic, intestinal parasites, influenza, and poor digestion. Resins, gums, and essential oils are the most active ingredients of the Ferula asafetida plant. Antioxidant, antifungal, antiviral, antitumor, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antispasmodic, hypertensive, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, and antiviral activities are all found in asafoetida.
