Star anise is the dry fruit of the star anise tree (Illicium verum). Star Anise is indigenous to Southeastern China and Vietnam. It is used as a spice in foods. Star Anise is used in pharmaceuticals because of its medicinal value. Due to the distinct flavor, Star Anise finds application in various culinary preparations and is widely used in Asian cuisines. It is used to flavor confectionaries, spirits, curries, soups, broths, soft drinks, bakery products, and liquors and pickles. The medicinal properties of Star Anise provided by the flavonoids and polyphenolic compounds offer it anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and carminative properties. The volatile, aromatic essential oil of Star Anise is commonly used for flavoring candies, liqueurs, and perfumes.
